Cllr Clare Coghill: Statement on fire at The Mall, Walthamstow

22 July 2019
Waltham Forest Town Hall - black

I would like to take this opportunity to thank officers from the London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police following the serious fire at the Mall in Walthamstow earlier today. It is in part down to their efforts that no one was injured during what was a very significant and extensive fire.

Thanks to their efforts no one has been injured and the fire is now under control. Council officers are now working with the businesses affected, as well as the owners Capital and Regional, to try and give immediate support during this difficult time.

We have provided temporary office space in nearby Hoe Street so that Capital and Regional have a base from which to operate and our Business Support Team are on hand to see where we can support retailers.

Walthamstow Mall is an important facility for many of our residents as well as to the visitors it attracts to the area. I share their concern around knowing how long the building will be closed for, but this will not be known for some time as structural engineers have to gain access to the site and then assess the damage to the structure.

Council offers will continue to support the businesses affected until the site is fully open once again.

Walthamstow Library was closed due to smoke caused by the fire but we plan to reopen tomorrow as usual. The bus station remains closed at this time.

The cause of the fire is being investigated and residents will be given updates as and when they are available.

Capital and Regional are members of the Retail Trust, a charity for people that work in retail. They will be arriving tomorrow to meet and assist staff affected by the fire and the subsequent closure.
