To apply for an exemption from Council Tax you’ll first need to log in, or sign up, to My Account. Then you need to link your Council Tax account (first time only). Find out how.
Once you’re logged in, click on your account and select ‘Apply for Council Tax discount or exemption’.

I am applying for a person who:
- is single
- is a student for at least one year
- has a severe mental impairment
- is in prison or detention by order of a court, or a person detained under the Mental Health Act 1983
- is aged 18-20 and receiving Child Benefit
- is under 20 years and will leave school or college between 1 May and 31 October in any year – the disregard will last until 1 November)
- has left a property to live in a care home or hospital
- has had a long stay in hospital
- provides care and support to another person for the council, charity or someone on certain benefits
I am applying for a qualifying unoccupied property which is:
- owned by a charity
- previously occupied by someone who has gone into prison or in detention
- previously occupied by someone who has left a property to live in a care home or hospital
- empty because someone has died
- illegal to live in
- waiting for a minister of religion to move in
- empty because someone has moved to receive personal care elsewhere
- empty because someone has moved to give personal care elsewhere
- previously occupied by a student or someone who became a student within six weeks of leaving the property
- has been repossessed by a mortgage lender
- where the person responsible for paying the Council Tax is a trustee in bankruptcy
- an unoccupied annex which is a separate part of a home that is being lived in
I am applying for a qualifying occupied property which is:
- student halls of residence
- where everyone is a full-time student (and their spouses or dependants are not EU Citizens)
- armed forces accommodation for non-visiting forces
- armed forces accommodation for visiting forces
- a pitch or a mooring not occupied by a caravan or a boat
- where everyone is under 18 years old
- where everyone has a severe mental impairment
- lived in by a diplomat
- annexed to a family home where a dependent relative lives
Use the 'Apply for Council Tax discount or exemption on behalf of someone else form if:
- detained or In Prison
- in a Care Home or Hospital
- is disabled
- passed away
- severe mental impairment
