Leader of Waltham Forest Council, Clare Coghill, said: “I know I speak for all Waltham Forest when thanking our police officers for the bravery and courage they show day in day out to keep London safe.

“The appalling machete attack on an officer in Leyton last night shows the dangers they put themselves in on our behalf.

“Our thoughts are with him, his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

“This fact that the officer continued to show tremendous bravery by continuing to defend others even whilst being attacked himself, is yet another example of their dedication and we all owe him and his colleagues a debt of gratitude.

“I am glad that the culprit has been arrested.

“I urge any witnesses to this attack to contact police via 101 or Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111.
