A planning application for Waltham Forest Council’s largest current redevelopment scheme has been submitted for approval.
The proposals include a new health and indoor sports centre, pre-school nursery and civic square, enclosed by retail and commercial space for existing and new start up business’s, along with 750 new homes as well as a new District Heating Centre Network and other measures to help reduce the impact of the Climate Emergency.
The re-development of The Score Centre is a joint project with Taylor Wimpey and is expected to be discussed by the council’s Planning Committee in Spring 2020.
The new Score Centre development, on council-owned land, will provide:
- 750 new homes contributing to meeting the borough’s housing need, with 50 per cent of them affordable
- Around 170 new trees
- an attractive civic square with retail outlets and cafes,
- commercial space for existing and start up businesses
- a health centre including a pharmacy
- a pre-school nursery
- a new sports and leisure complex for indoor sports with community facilities including, flexible use and meeting room spaces
- high-quality landscaping, public open space and play areas including a large water feature
- a district heating energy centre
- enhancements to the transport and cycle network networks
A council spokesperson said: “This is an exciting project, that will deliver a large number of new homes for local people while delivering new facilities for health care, pre-school children and an indoor leisure centre with community facilities.
“The new Civic Square, which includes space for outdoor markets and performances, will provide a focal point for this part of the borough where residents can shop, visit restaurants or just enjoy being in the fresh air.
“It has been designed to help reduce the impact of the Climate Emergency with solar panels to generate electricity, a district heating energy centre to provide hot water and heating to the homes and other facilities on the site as well as specially designed waste management facilities to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste.
“The new buildings will be more energy efficient than the current facilities and the planting on the site will include species to help improve air quality.”

The development will create approximately 200 long-term full-time jobs across a range of sectors, as well as construction jobs for the area including 38 training placements.
“Taylor Wimpey East London has aligned our vision for the Coronation Square development with the council’s and neighbourhood objectives, following consultation with the local community on the proposals and has included feedback from local stakeholders and residents in the final designs. The project delivery means the existing facilities will continue to operate until they move to their new location when the development is completed.
The whole project is due to be completed by 2027.
