Following the fire at The Mall on Monday 22 July 2019, Waltham Forest Council is now working with the Mall’s management team from owners Capital & Regional (C&R), to give immediate support to businesses affected during this difficult time.
The Council has established an Economic and Business Recovery Task Force to support businesses affected by the fire and work to find them alternative venues such as vacant units elsewhere in Waltham Forest.
Walthamstow’s Mall is an important facility for many local residents as well as to the visitors it attracts to the area and the Council’s Business Growth Team are in contact to support where they can. The Council are also looking at ways in which retailers can use other venues or develop pop-up retail offers elsewhere in Walthamstow for the benefit of residents and businesses alike.
The Council is supporting The Mall’s team efforts to identify property space opportunities to support those tenants affected by the fire to enable them to continue trading. This has included providing a temporary Command and Control centre for C&R at one of the Council properties on Hoe Street.
A temporary emergency pharmacy in portacabin accommodation located in the Town Square will enable customers to collect prescriptions and other vital medications. It is expected to be operational in the coming days.
The Council is working alongside The Mall’s team on a Recovery Action Plan that will support not only these businesses in the short, medium and longer term but also ensure that we work with businesses and traders across the town to minimise the impact on the local economy. The Council will continue to support businesses until the site is fully restored and ensure residents have a retail offer to minimise the impact of the fire.
The Council’s Building Control Service/Team have been working with the emergency services and C&R to ensure the building is safe. The site has now been handed back to The Mall’s team for them to complete the clean-up process.
C&R is committed to reopening The Mall as quickly and safely as possible and expect that several businesses will potentially reopen in the coming days, with the remaining businesses reopening through a phased approach.
