Who we are and what we do
London Borough of Waltham Forest has installed CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) cameras in various locations within the borough for the purposes of reducing crime, disorder, anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime by helping to provide a safer environment for those people who live and work in the area and for visitors travelling through the area.
CCTV is also installed on highways for the purpose of monitoring traffic on a permanent or temporary basis. In all locations, signs are displayed notifying you that CCTV is in operation and providing details of who to contact for further information about the scheme.
Purpose of collecting your personal data
Why we need your information and how we use it - Main purposes of the CCTV system is to provide the Police and enforcement agencies with assistance to detect deter and prevent crime and disorder; to help identify, apprehend and prosecute offenders; to provide the Police/Council with evidence to enable criminal and/or civil proceedings to be brought in the courts, and to maintain public order.
Some examples of how we use your data are provided below; please note this is not an exhaustive list:
- providing evidence in criminal proceedings (police and criminal evidence act 1984 and criminal procedure and investigation act 1996)
- providing evidence in civil proceedings
- the prevention and reduction of crime and disorder
- the investigation and detection of crime
- identification of witnesses

What type of information is collected from you
Live video recording images of an identifiable individual 24 hours a day.
Who your information may be shared with (internally and externally)
Information may be shared with other agencies such as the police, fire brigade, ambulance and other relevant agencies as required in the event of an emergency, prevention or detection of crime.
How you can access, update, or correct your information
Recorded material is not provided to members of the public or media organisations for profit, gain or commercial exploitation.
This does not affect the right of individuals to access any personal data under the provisions of Data Protection Law. This is called a ‘Subject Access Request'.
How long we keep your information
Evidence supplied to the police for criminal cases is retained for 2 years, however all other footage that is not used is automatically deleted off servers after 30 days.
