Motor vehicle traffic collisions are a major cause of preventable deaths and morbidity, particularly in younger age groups. The vast majority of road traffic collisions are preventable and can be avoided through improved education, awareness, road infrastructure and vehicle safety. The need for safer roads is also linked to local and national efforts to increase active travel and physical activity.

In 2021, a total of 80 people were killed or seriously injured on roads in Waltham Forest, resulting in a rate of 164.5 casualties per billion vehicle miles. This rate surpassed the estimated rate of 95.6 per billion vehicle miles in England but fell below the rate of 194 per billion vehicle miles in London.
