Waltham Forest Adult Learning Service in partnership with Barts Health are offering you an opportunity to start a career within the National Health Service (NHS).

After completing the course, you will be registered on the Barts Health talent pool allowing you to apply for ringfenced job opportunities. You will also be offered the opportunity to take part in a 6 week work placement at one of the 5 Barts Health Centres.

These placements can lead to a job opportunity as well as giving you an insight into the NHS and give you valuable work experience skills which you can then add to your CV when applying for ring fenced roles.

Successful candidates will need to have a DBS check before being offered a placement.

Barts is the largest NHS trust in the country with over 17,000 employees. It is home to the largest children’s hospital and home to the London Air Ambulance.

'We Care' values are embedded across the service: values of being welcoming, engaging, collaborative, accountable, respectful and equitable.

A big emphasis is placed on these values during the training.

Who the pathway is available to

The NHS Jobs Pathway is only available to

  • Waltham Forest residents 
  • Ages 19 or over.
  • Unemployed or economically inactive.
  • Have the right to work in the UK.
  • Have good digital skills.
  • Have a good standard of English and Maths.
  • Are committed to the training programme and are genuinely interested in working for the NHS once training is complete.

What you learn on the programme

  • Information about the different roles within Barts Health NHS.
  • Barts NHS Values and understand how to incorporate them into your role.
  • How to analyse a job description.
  • Learn to write a good/great supporting statement and match the person specification.
  • Understand your strengths and key skills and how to talk about them enthusiastically.
  • How to demonstrate the key skills needed for the role in a job interview.
  • Learn how to give a good, confident and enthusiastic presentation to a group.
  • Understand the key working methods of the role – infection control, safeguarding, GDPR, Equalities Act and Communication within the NHS

We offer:

A one week training programme at one of our main Adult Learning Centre: Queens Road Centre or the Junction Centre.

We offer 1 to 1 after course support with a dedicated employment advisor to help you secure a job within the trust after registering with our employment team.

How much the course costs

This is a free course.

Jobs that could be available

Band 2 to 3:

  • Admin or clerical
  • Healthcare assistants
  • Theatre support workers
  • Phlebotomists (previous experience in phlebotomy is required or a minimum of 2 weeks phlebotomy training)
  • Medical lab assistants (a biomedical or science degree is required and must not be in education)
  • Pharmacy assistants (a pharmacology or related degree is required.)

If you do not have the relevant work experience

If you do not possess relevant experience, you can sign up for the volunteering within the Trust.

Where you will study

The programme will be delivered at one of our 2 main adult learning centres:

  • Queens Road Walthamstow or
  • The Junction Centre, Leytonstone.

If you are interested in this pathway and what do I need to do

If you would like to be considered, you will need to register your interest by clicking the 'apply now' button at the bottom of the page.

You will then be contacted by a member of our team who will arrange for you come to one of our centres and sit a short English and Maths assessment.

If successful, you will then be invited to attend an information session with Barts Health, which will then be followed by a one to one interview with Barts Health.

Candidates who have successfully passed the assessment and interview will be invited to attend the one week Barts Health course with the Waltham Forest Adult Learning Service.
