Game licence legislation dates back to the 19th century.
Both the Game Act 1831 and the Game licences Act 1860 deal with offences concerning the taking and trading in game without the appropriate licence. The sale of venison is covered separately under the 1991 and 1959 Deer Acts. Copies of the Game Act 1831 and the Game Licence Act 1860 can be obtained from Her Majesty's Stationery Office.
