EHE Protocol document (PDF) aims to provide clarity for schools, parents, carers, guardians, and related agencies. It gives guidance on the protocol and procedures to be observed when a parent decides to home educate their child when of compulsory school age.

The protocol sets out parents’ rights to educate their children at home. It also details the legal duties and responsibilities of head teachers and the Local Authority. The protocol sets out the arrangements the Behaviour, Attendance and Children Missing Education (BACME) Service from the Local Authority will make in order to carry out its legal duties.
