New nature garden designed with Lea Bridge schoolchildren
Families in Lea Bridge celebrated the completion of a vibrant new green space on Perth Road, E10 on Saturday 7 September. Residents helped to put the finishing touches on the garden by planting and installing bird feeders.
Waltham Forest Council, along with architects what if: projects worked with a group of local primary school students to help design the space which was then constructed by landscape designers Meristem Design.
The previously underused area has been transformed into a biodiverse oasis for residents and local families over the summer following resident feedback as part of the Lea Bridge Area Framework.
Located opposite Sybourn Early Excellence Centre, the new garden has created an enriching educational space and peaceful retreat for both schoolchildren and the community to enjoy.
Earlier this year, local schoolchildren helped to design the nature garden through creative workshops.
The new space includes new trees and plants, as well as a small accessible enclosure suitable for learning about nature and habitats. A new step-free gravel pathway connects the garden to Lea Bridge Road alongside secluded seating spots, so parents, children, and residents can enjoy the space.
A maintenance plan is in place for the new planting and there’s still an opportunity for residents to get involved to keep the garden looking fresh.
The new garden was made possible by funds from local housing growth and part-funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
