About the scheme

As part of the Mini-Holland Programme, we transformed the Church Road area to encourage more people to walk and cycle. Church Road runs between Lea Bridge Road and High Road Leyton, and forms part of the Leyton to Blackhorse Road Cycle Route.

The Church Road scheme was introduced to:

  • Encourage more residents and visitors to walk and cycle
  • Improve road safety and the look and feel of the area for all road users
  • Improve access across the borough including access to local amenities and services.

Changes to Chruch Road included:

  • Separated north and southbound cycle lanes on Church Road between Lea Bridge Road and Capworth Street
  • A quieter and safer cycle route for cyclists travelling north and south via Capworth Street, Manor Road, and Grange Park Road
  • Separated two-way cycle lanes on Grange Park Road (south) Leyton High Road and Church Road
  • Street improvements including new street lighting, better signage and wayfinding
  • 20mph zones
  • Bus stop improvements to make them more accessible for all
  • Safer crossings at road junctions.

Consultation and engagement

A perception survey took place between 17 March and 7 April 2015 to find out what people thought about the local area and the types of improvements they would like to see. This information was used to inform designs of the Church Road scheme.

Local people were invited to take part in a public consultation for the scheme from Friday 3 July to Friday 24 July 2015. A consultation leaflet was sent to 3,000 households in the local area notifying residents and businesses about the plans, an online survey and a drop-in session where people could find out more about the proposals and ask questions.

You can view the consultation leaflet and report in the useful documents section below.
