About the scheme

As part of the Mini-Holland Programme, we introduced four town centre schemes, including one in Leyton Town Centre, to make it easier for people to walk and cycle for local journeys, improve connections between our borough’s town centres, and improve the overall look and feel of these areas.

The Leyton Town Centre scheme included a range of improvements to the area to reduce the amount of non-local traffic using local streets, to create better walking and cycling routes to help people get around more easily and safely, and new public spaces to encourage more people to spend time in the area.

Consultation and engagement

Between 5 June and 26 June 2015, we conducted a perception survey to find out what local people thought about the area and the type of improvements they would like to see. The survey was available online and over 11,000 copies were hand-delivered to all households in the area. Over 500 people responded and provided more than 690 individual comments. The feedback to the perception survey was used to create a design for the area which was taken to the public consultation stage in January 2016.

A public consultation on the plans for the Leyton Town Centre scheme took place between 10 January and 31 January 2016. Residents were invited to take part in an online survey and visit a drop-in session to ask questions about the scheme. In total 334 people responded to the consultation providing 828 individual comments.

Overall, 52% of respondents were supportive of the proposals, 34% were neutral and 14% were not supportive of the proposals. As a result of the public consultation, we made several roads one-way to further reduce rat-running and installed an additional modal filter in Clyde Place near the junction with Sophia Road. You can read more about the outcome of the consultation in the consultation update letters and summary found in the useful documents section below.
