About the scheme

The Markhouse Area was one of a series of residential areas in the borough that received investment as part of the Mini-Holland Programme to create great places to live, work, and travel around.

The Markhouse Area is bordered by Hoe Street, Selborne Road, Markhouse Road and Lea Bridge Road and aimed to:

  • Reduce the amount of non-local traffic using the area
  • Improve the look, feel and safety of the streets for all road users
  • Improve routes to and from local schools and other places of interest in the area
  • Encourage people to use healthy modes of transport.

Consultation and engagement

In September 2018, we ran a public consultation on the designs for the Markhouse area to gather resident feedback on the plans. You can view the full proposals in the public consultation leaflet found in the useful documents section below.

More than 2,200 people responded to the public consultation providing almost 13,000 comments. After a detailed analysis of the feedback, the council decided not to progress the proposals. However, it was noted there was some interest from residents in two areas, therefore we decided to engage with the community a second time to develop the plans for these two sections further.

In April 2019, a second public consultation was held to collect resident’s input on updated plans for Series 3 (Gosport Road area). Residents were broadly supportive of the changes.

In July 2019, we held a co-design workshop at Edinburgh Primary School with residents from the Series 4 area (Chelmsford Road, Lansdowne Road, and Somerset Road areas) to understand local priorities, and in January 2020, ran a public consultation on the proposals for Series 4. A total of 26% of households took part in the consultation, and most were supportive of the measures.

You can read more about the consultation results in the consultation report and post consultation update leaflets found in the useful documents section below

Construction

Following the public consultations for Series 3 and Series 4, the schemes were approved by Waltham Forest Council and progressed to the construction stage.

Construction for Series 3, the Gosport Road area, took place in summer 2020.

However, unfortunately, due to Covid-19 and the reduction in funding for local authorities, not all the proposals for Series 4 could be progressed to the construction stage, such as the planned traffic calming improvements throughout the area and public art on Queen’s Road and Boundary Road. Construction for the rest of the scheme took place in summer 2020.
